She Is Conscious — poem by Alexandra Gold

She Is Conscious

She is Conscious

One day she woke up
It was a day like any other
And yet she felt different somehow
Like she was in a parallel world

She couldn’t put her finger on it
But the stars sparkled brighter
As if they were willing her to explore the universe with a little bit more energy

As the dawn broke and the sun peaked over the horizon, She gasped in wonder
She had never noticed how spectacular the romance between the sun and moon was.
Reminding her of unrequited love
Always searching for one another – never meeting

As she brewed her first cup of coffee
She revelled in the aroma
Her anticipation that of a child waiting for their birthday
She took her first sip and the flavour burst onto her tastebuds
Immediately inducing a state of gratitude

As she watched the coffee steam into a spiral
She was reminded of the circle of life
Beginnings, endings
Give, receive
Rich, poor
Good, bad
Balance

Whilst getting ready for the day
What had become boring and routine
Suddenly became a sensory experience
Her wardrobe a rainbow of colours and textures
She knew instinctively what to wear as her hand danced over the array of clothing and picked her mood
She skipped along the street feeling a sassiness long forgotten
And noticed the shock on passers by as she smiled from ear to ear
She heard everything much clearer
The bird song ever so sweet and the
Guards command brash and angry

As she watched passers by file past her she noticed the scorn and sadness upon their faces
Did they not see the beauty?
Could they not find the wonder?

She went about her day
Becoming acutely aware that although she was speaking to others in her native tongue, they were not communicating in the same language

She spoke words in kindness
Thought with compassion and empathy
And found solutions to challenges
Yet she noticed how her happiness and optimism wasn’t contagious

It was hers and hers alone
And she wanted to share it with the world
