She Remembers — poem by Alexandra Gold

She Remembers

She Remembers
All those who went before her
Giving their lives for her
Giving up everything
Sacrifice
War
Oppression
All imprinted on their souls
For her freedom

She Remembers
So that she can embody
Their dignity
Their devotion
And honour them in her work
Moving forward
In her Freedom

She Remembers
In order that she is instilled
With their sense of duty
To her brethren on this planet
No matter how big
No matter the fear
She does her work
In her freedom

She Remembers
Because if she doesn’t
Her children may be fooled
Into senseless wars
Into senseless chains
And she will not waste
The memory
Of the price they paid for Freedom
She Remembers

Because she sees the flippant ways
Those who take their freedom for granted
Authority given in a power that is not theirs
Persuasion of a different kind yet still as dangerous
Opinion given in anger rather than love and overbearing
Judgment born in the disguise of being for the better
Without any thought to those who have felt real fear, real oppression, real hunger, real war, real cold, real chains, real blood
And given their lives
For the Freedom of others

She Remembers
Because there are still those who live with this fear
Every day in sacrifice
Their own
Their children's
Their lovers
Their fathers
Their mothers
Their everything
And until the day comes when this is not so
Then she has work to do

She Remembers
She Will Never Forget
